Huangshan, China, over Chinese New Year, 2009

It's pretty rare to have five consecutive days off for Chinese New Year. This year we did so mom and I went on a tour to Huangshan in the Anhui Province of China. Huangshan is known for its four wonders: strange pines (奇松), absurd rocks (怪石), sea of clouds (雲海), and hot springs (溫泉), with snow (雪景) being called the fifth wonder by some.

We flew from Hong Kong to Shanghai, then took a six-hour bus ride to Tunxi (屯溪), which is at the bottom of Huangshan. On the second day, we toured around a bit at the Hong Village (宏村), a well-preserved and beautiful village where the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was shot. Then we took the cable car up Huangshan and spent the night there.

On the third morning, we woke up to a thin layer of snow on the ground. We weren't able to see sunrise, but we were greeted by snow the fifth wonder. It snowed pretty heavily in the morning and the pine trees accumulated just the right amount of snow and it was beautiful.

On the fourth morning we were finally able to see a bit of sunrise and a bit of the sea of clouds, although the snow was almost all gone. We spent the night in Hangzhou and had a chance to stroll along Xihu, the West Lake. We then left for Hong Kong the following day.

We had the mountain almost only to ourselves on the CNY eve and CNY day. By the second day of CNY, the mountain was starting to be packed again. We picked the best time to visit the place.

Here's the photos.
