Day 1 in Bali

For some reason, I decided not to post this piece of writing that I actually wrote on the first evening of my Bali trip. I think the details are worth mentioning now that I look at it again. So here it goes.

I have finally set foot on the Southern Hemisphere! It’s really not particularly exciting. But it was a different experience for me when I arrived at the Bali airport. Since I held a Canadian passport, I had to line up with the other foreigners for the Visa. I heard a lot of English around me, but that Australian accent seemed so weird to me. I’ve had limited exposure to Aussies or Kiwis so I’m not too acquainted with their accent. It took me extra effort trying to understand them. It took me a long, long, long time to line up at immigration. My line simply didn’t move. I really have to give some credit to the Hong Kong Immigration. I ended up having 18 other people in the group waiting for me to get through.

We stopped by at the dive centre to leave our gear there. Then we went to the resort. The resort is fine, as long as you’ve mentally prepared yourself that the real thing would never appear as nice as they do in pictures. I’m now sitting at the balcony of my room facing the swimming pool blogging.

We had dinner at a nice restaurant near the hotel. We must’ve ordered over 15 dishes (for 9 people) plus I don’t know how many beers (but I only had a sip to try the local beer). We paid only HK$90 per person. The food was alright, though the setting was quite nice. It’s unfortunate that our other half of the group got a little too excited particularly after a few beers. They started getting loud and our table decided to leave first. When we got back to the hotel, the reception actually asked our group leader very nicely to have us be quieter at the hotel because there were complaints from other guests. I sort of knew it. These things always happen (to Chinese people) when large groups of people are involved. That’s another reason why I don’t like travelling (or generally, hanging out) with large groups of people.

Anyways. That’s the end of the first day. Nothing very exciting. Oh by the way, it’s way harder to get decent connection here in Bali than I’ve expected.
